\n\tAt 90 years old, Michael Caine is reflecting on his extraordinary life and career ahead of the release of what he has implied might be his last film.<\/p>\n
\n\tDuring a recent interview with The Telegraph<\/em>, the Oscar-winning English actor opens up about his role in The Great Escaper<\/em>, which he stars opposite Glenda Jackson, who\u00a0died at 87 in June, just months after filming ended.<\/p>\n \n\tThe Oliver Parker-directed film is based on the true story of a British World War II veteran, Bernard Jordan (Caine), who escapes from his care home to attend the 70th anniversary of the D-Day celebrations in France.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI was so happy to do it,\u201d Caine told the outlet. \u201cI just loved the character of Bernie. I thought he was incredible, and it\u2019s so beautifully written.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tCaine said he thought he was finished with acting since he hadn\u2019t done a film in three years due to COVID-19, but then he got the opportunity to play Bernard and \u201csuddenly did it \u2013 and had such a wonderful time.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tAlthough he admitted that playing the role was quite challenging physically. \u201cThey gave me a very good walking stick, and I was able to do scenes that needed that. I\u2019d just do them once, and then fall over,\u201d he explained. \u201cBut just one take, and that\u2019s it. Forget it.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tLater during the interview, when asked about retirement, Caine said he\u2019s \u201csort of\u201d retired now. \u201cI am bloody 90 now, and I can\u2019t walk properly and all that,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n \n\tIf The Great Escaper<\/em> does mark Caine\u2019s last film, it would follow a decades-long career in the industry with more than 100 credits, including The Dark Knight<\/em>, The Prestige, The Cider House Rules<\/em>, The Quiet American<\/em> and more.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI\u2019ve had the best possible life I could have thought of,\u201d he later said. \u201cThe best possible wife, and the best possible family. They may not be a family that other people would say is the best possible family \u2013 but the best possible family for me.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tAs for what he would like to be remembered for, he said, \u201cThe fact that I remained an actor all my life, and I never went into anything else.
